It’s not rude when your fave declines to take a picture with/for you. When you ask, you are actually interrupting their day and their privacy. This may be delightful to them or annoying or frightening. And no matter how you approach it and why, it’s still up to them to decide which it is and deal with it as they wish regardless.

I do not understand this argument that They should be more grateful. To you? Should they thank every person they encounter on the street? Or just the ones who let them know that they owe them? that they have power over them? that they are nothing without them? Maybe they should get down on their knees just so that public property thing is clear? (Oh man now I want to write an awesome dystopian novel about fame. Gross.)

Look, lots of celebs have the time, inclination, wiring, personal circumstances, professional strategy to stop and take a picture with you. But lots don’t. And the angry responses I see really look like fans trying to claim power they don’t have in ways that kind of freak me out. Because what I hear in a lot of this is a desire people have to say You are nothing without me.

And if you wouldn’t, I hope, say that to the people you love in your life (your friends, your partners, your family), I’m completely un-the-fuck clear why it’s okay to essentially say that about your fave who wouldn’t stop for a pic.

Basically, last night, this was me for half a second (the fan who wanted a picture. I don’t think this is about me as I quickly realized my error and bounced) before I realized why I was actually upset:

I was that fan. Because they don’t owe us anything. Yes, we are fans, yes we help them continue their career, but if they don’t feel like taking a picture or stopping they have that right. They really do. That’s why I was upset, because I realized that this behavior of entitlement is not healthy nor is it correct in any sort of fashion.

It’s part of the reason I’m pulling back from certain fandom events and activities. Not that this is the celebs’ fault, but something entirely of my own making.

TL;DR: Your favorite celeb doesn’t really owe you a picture/their time if they aren’t willing to get it, and I knew that and now I know that.
